What Kind Of Paint Do You Need?

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PAINT FOR THE JOB
Picture
Despite all the variety of paints you will find in the home renovation stores, there are really only 2 types of house paint to choose from; water based and solvent (or oil) based.

Water based paints include emulsion, quick drying egg-shell and water-based gloss. These are ideal for walls, while the gloss is good on most interior woodwork and trim.
Modern emulsion paints contain vinyl, which makes them both durable and easy to clean.  They are available in a variety of finishes such as:
  • matte
  • egg-shell
  • silk
  • soft sheen
  • textured finishes

Solvent (or oil) based paints include what is referred to as traditional eggshell and gloss, sheen finishes, lacquers and metal paint.  These types are best saved for areas that endure hard use, for exterior and interior woodwork and metalwork.   Because these paints do have unpleasant fumes associated with them, be sure to work in very well ventilated areas.  These paints are flammable and need to be stored carefully.  Always follow the manufacturers directions.

For best results, always the same brand of primer, undercoat and topcoat, they are all designed to perform best when used together.

Looking to paint special surfaces?
  • Bathrooms require anti-condensation paints.
  • Anti-damp and Anti-stain paints will create synthetic barrier to make damp stains invisible.
  • Colour and heat resistant enamel paints are available for fire places and other other hot spots.
  • Tile paint is designed for ceramic tile painting, priming is required.
